Pakistani officials say a suspected US missile strike on a compound has killed five people near the Afghan border.

Noor Ahmed, a senior government official in North Waziristan, says Sunday’s attack occurred near Miramshah, the main town in the rugged tribal area. He says tribesmen have recovered five bodies so far.

Two intelligence officials confirmed the attack in the village of Tabbi Tolkhel. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

North Waziristan is considered a sanctuary for al Qaeda and Taliban militants on the Afghan border. The United States has been pushing Pakistan to launch a military offensive in the region, but the Pakistan military says it lacks the resources to go on the offensive there.

The identities of those killed in the attack were unknown.
